WDS Contributes to UAE Mangrove Reforestation.
At Wellbore Debris Solutions, we believe in the importance of giving back to the environment and the communities that support us. Our decision to sponsor 250 mangrove trees is a small but significant step towards a more sustainable future. We are deeply committed to reducing our environmental impact and promoting practices that contribute to the well-being of our planet.
Mangrove forests are the lungs of the UAE, as the dominant coastal vegetation of the Arabian Peninsula, mangroves are an essential eco system. Mangrove trees store carbon dioxide (CO2) at a rate two to five times greater per equivalent area than tropical forests, helping reduce the negative impact of greenhouse gasses.
The mangrove species found in the United Arab Emirates is the extremely salt-tolerant grey mangrove (Avicennia marina), known locally as "Qurm." Studies have revealed that this species can withstand twice as much salinity as saltwater contains.
Mangrove forests, which are found between shorelines and open sea, are an essential component of coastal ecosystems because they provide cover for a variety of creatures, including fish, prawns, crab, oysters, barnacles, phytoplankton, and sponges.
Mangroves are halophytes, or salt-water-adapted plants. A mangrove functions by expelling salt from the underside of their leaves and absorbing air through their respiratory roots. Making this plant more sustainable since, in contrast to other tree species, they can thrive in salty water and do not depend on freshwater supplies, which are quite limited in the region. 250 mangrove trees can retain an estimated 375 metric tons of carbon over their lifetime.
The UAE have pledged to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030. ‘Companies for Good’ are a proud selected partner of the government initiative to help achieve this objective.
We are delighted to now be a part of the UAE’s vision to reforest the mangrove natural reserves as well.
WDS’ director; Paul Confield, says “If every company does what they can, even a little, it will make a huge impact globally.”
This initiative is just one part of our broader environmental strategies. WDS are continually looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint and support environmental projects that align with our values.
As we celebrate World Environment Day, we are excited by the opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment. We hope World Environment Day 2024 inspires further land restoration.
WDS are grateful for the support of Companies for Good in making this initiative possible. Together, we are planting the seeds for a greener, more resilient future.
